Members of the study group complete a 5 year BA/MA program this spring, the Lauree Specialistiche:
CLERI - Corso di Laurea in Economia, Reti, Informazione
They are 8 students, 7 males and 1 female:
B. Nick Colby. "One is fine, or I can host up to three if two are willing to share a room. Also, I will be making full day's trips to campus this fall so transportation shouldn't be the problem." [Nick lives fairly near campus, although not walking distance].
Keith Finlay, Econ grad student, 5024 Verano Place and 949-295-2418. cell phone 949-294-0847 is renting his room to one of the students, and this will serve as a point of contact for the group as they drive down from LAX and make contact with their hosts, arriving after 5:15 but exact time unknown.
Garrett Asay Fabio and Luca, as noted above, have working cell phones for Friday contacts
We are happy to hear from other volunteers for hosting our visitors, all of whom are fluent in English.
Undergraduate students, graduate students, staff and faculty are all welcome to volunteer; some of the expenses
incurred will be compensated. Contact the chair of the focused research group, Doug White, drwhite at @uci.edu
or 858 452 9957/457 0077.
The group will rent two cars at LAX and we will make arrangements for them to meet up with their host families.
Possible discussants (Mon/Wed/Fri)
I'll plan on being at my apartment from 5:15 on Friday. Looking forward
to a fruitful and interesting two weeks!
The general schedule and tuesday/thursday mini-lecture series with Doug White
M-W-F Events - on these days some of our UCI faculty and graduate students will give hour/hour and a half presentations or
discussions
To arrange a presentation (our program can provide space and equipment) contact drwhite [at] @uci.edu or 858 452 9957/457 0077.
Possible Topics (Mon/Wed/Fri):
Economics
Agent-based modeling
Networks
Methods of Analysis
E-commerce
Statistical learning/data mining
Nonstandard logics/axiomatic reasoning

Padhraic Smyth, ICS/MBS, responds "I'm happy to oblige - its always worthwhile to talk to
potential new Phd students and certainly these students
have put out alot of effort to visit UCI. 2 questions:
- what sort of talk do you think would be appropriate? I
have some tutorial talks on statistical learning/data
mining, coupled with various interesting projects
going on in my group - this would give them a sense of
both underlying foundations and specific projects.
- when should this be done? how long are they here
for?
Bonnie Nardi, ICS, e-communities, responds "I am hosting a 3 day workshop October 22-24, which I'm working hard on
and I have travel to two conferences coming up shortly after, so this
time frame doesn't work well for me.
If there is a particular student who is really interested in
computer-mediated communication, e-democracy, or scientific
collaboration, I would be glad to meet with them individually.
Katie Faust, Sociology/MBS, networks?
Lin Freeman, Sociology/MBS, networks and visualization, responds, "Will get back to you on this"
Carter Butts, Sociology/MBS, network analysis?
Robert Garfias, Anthropology, ethnomusicology?
Brian Skyrms, Logic & Philosophy of Science/MBS, evolutionary game theory?
Donald Saari, Economics/MBS, mathematical dynamics, responds
If I can, I will give a lecture. However, I am away during part of
the time they are here and during the rest of the time, I am working
on a conference. I will do what I can.
Natalia Komarova, Mathematics/MBS, mathematical dynamics?
graduate students such Scott White (Java Universal Networks and Graphs library),
Matt Mahugta (World Trade Networks), Steve DeWaters (Corporate Networks and Psychology)...?

possible meetings on the academic PhD programs (Mon/Wed/Fri) (* for special interest to study group members)
-- Anthropology, Mike Burton
-- *Mathematical Behavior Sciences, Louis Narens
-- *Economics, Pirya Ranjan
-- Social Dynamics and Evolution, Duran Bell
-- Sociology, David Smith (Monday 25th) and Carter Butts (TBA: I would be happy to
put together something moderately didactic on the use of stochastic
models in network analysis. That way, I can expose them to some basics
while still highlighting some of my (and others'!) current research.)
-- Graduate School of Management (GSM), Mary Gilly would like to go to lunch with the group one day to talk about GSM research and their PhD program
-- *Information and Computer Science, Padhraic Smyth or Bonnie Nardi
dates/times open for discussions...and some now scheduled
(Mon/Wed/Fri) As with other talks, these are all Open Seminars, e.g., for Social Sci graduate students or prospective students as well

Background, Preparation
Doug White gave 6 lectures in December 2003 to the 25 students in CLERI cohort at Reggio university. For the CLERI study group
to continue to gain background in the field of Social Networks, we might ask Linton C. Freeman to present his concept map (CMAP)
of Social Network Analysis. To do this exploration you might also want to
download CMAP and install the software
